-Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) is the rate at which red blood cells precipitate in a period of one hour.

-This is a nonspecific test for inflammatory and lymphoproliferative disorders.

-To measure ESR, non coagulated blood is placed in an upright tube, the rate at which red blood cells fall is measured and expressed in millimeters per hour.

-Normal value of ESR is 3-7 mm/hr

-Pro sedimentation factor is fibrinogen and anti sedimentation factor is -ve charge on RBCs.

-ESR is raised in pregnancy, rheumatoid arthritis etc. and decreased in polycythemia, sickle cell anemia, hereditary spherocytosis, CHF.
