A field exam measures your peripheral vision- how far and accurately you can see around you whlist focussing on a central point. Depending on the type of machine and test used, an fields test can last between 30 seconds and 12 minutes per eye. One eye at a time, you will focus on a central point on the screen in front of you. this is usually a black dot. Lights or dots will flash up around the screen and you will need to press a button every time you see one. The machine will know if you are cheating so it's important to stay focussed. At the end of the test, your accuracy will be measured. Visual fields exams are particularly useful in the early diagnosis of some eye conditions, for example glaucoma and macular degeneration.
