It actually depends on what kind of game you like, and of course which one is better is based on opinion. If you like a straight forward JRPG with a flowing story and and great character development, although the battle system is dated and the random battles are tedious, go for FFIV.
If you want a game that focusses more on gameplay with a great class system, streamlined battles, and lots of exploration, which also has a good story and good characters, although not as memorable as FFIV, go for FFV. They're both great games, though, so try them both out and see which one you like best.

Final Fantasy IV, V and VI (4, 5 and 6) were all remade on Gameboy Advance around 2006. Final Fantasy III and IV (3 and 4) were re made again on Nintendo DS. They're the ones i know of recently.

Why is Final Fantasy 6 released in US as Final Fantasy 3?
Only Final Fantasy 1, 4 and 6 were translated for the US market. Rather than confusing people by keeping the original names, they were released as Final Fantasy 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Final Fantasy 7 was released without changing the number however.The names have been corrected since in various re-releases, and the original FF2, 3 and 5 have all been released in english.
