Inhand means you are not physically up riding on the horse. You are showing them off while standing on the ground. A common name for this is halter or showmanship.

The best length I have found for braiding is about 3 to 4 inches long. That is really the longest your horses mane should be any time.

I dont personaly show in 4-H horse shows i have found that they have a rediculus rules (at lest the ones by me). if you are thinking about showing in a 4-H horse show you should contact your 4-H leader and get a Horse show rule book
Most horses are shown in hand using a leather show halter specifically designed and made for that purpose. Training your horse to be shown is key, and taking a poorly trained horse into an arena full of other horses and showmen/women is dangerous. Nothing takes the place of adequate training.
horses can , obviously, go in a horse show check around your city or town if there are any local horse shows and you could become involved and maybe even join a club

I would say yes, many, many people wear cosmetics at horse shows when showing, there are most likely many that may not wear cosmetics, it's a personal choice I would think.
