material science is the exploration and research of different materials. research on things such as, density, elasticity, conductivity, or chemical compound. (to name a few)

material engineering is the application of material science to solve a problem or construct a material to solve a problem to improve someones something.

for example: if a company is looking for a high density metal object, but wants it to have low conductivity, then they would look to a material engineer for a design of a man made material that they could use.
