Medieval warfare is warfare that took place during the Middle Ages. Armies during medieval times consisted of knights, heavy cavalry, light cavalry, and infantry. Weapons used in medieval warfare were axes, daggers, blades, swords, clubs, crossbows, lances, and throwing axes among many other weapons. Soldiers of medieval armies typically dressed in armour made from metal plates and leather. The soldiers also carried shields and wore helmets.
Most Medieval wars functioned on siege warfare and large battles. They had heavily armoured knights (both mounted and on foot), pikemen (pikes are either spears with an axe on the end, or very long spears, some of which were over 6 meters), archers and other foot soldiers (the most common weapons being swords, maces and spears). Some nations (especially Iberian ones, i.e. Portugal, Spain and the Moors, all of which made use of mounted skirmishers) used cavalry other than knights. In the 13th century, gunpowder was introduced to Europe, and most Europe nations made some use of it in the Medieval era, however it was not a major component of warfare until the mid 16th century, the beginning of the Renaissance era.
