according to this principle,an insurance policy is designed to provide compensation only for such losses as are caused by the perils which are stated in the policy. when the loss is the result of two or more causes, the proximate cause means the direct, the most dominant and most effective cause of which the loss is natural consequence. in case of loss arising out of any mishap, the most proximate cause of the mishap should be taken into consideration

A proximate cause is the immediate cause that resulted in the observed reaction. The ultimate cause is the original event that started the chain of events that led to the observed reaction.

For example, if a person is observed to fall, the proximate cause of the fall might be tripping over an object. The ultimate cause might be a child playing with toy cars at that location. An intermediate cause might be the child not picking up the toys when he/she was done playing with them. The entire chain of events, from start to finish, would be: child playing with cars, mother calls child to another room, child leaves cars lying on the floor, father walks into room, father steps on cars, father loses his balance and falls on the floor.

"Our present lack of such ultimate explanations leaves a nig intellectual gap, since the broadest pattern of history thus remains unexplained. Much more serious, though, is the moral gap left unfilled." (Diamond 24). While we know the proximate causes to answer Yali's question, their still remains the question of why Eurasia got guns, germs and steel rather than Africa or the Americas. The question remains why is it that "Modern Europe is not a society molded by sub-Saharan black Africans who brought millions of Native Americans as slaves."(Diamond 25). If the ultimate cause is not identified, the same racist biological explanation will still be thought to be correct by most people.

Wikipedia it bro!
Proximate sounds similar to the word proximal, meaning closest or closer to a certain point.
Ultimate (sometimes called distal) is used to refer to the bigger picture cause.
Proximal is more the immediate reason in the chain of "why did the animal do this behavior).
Distal is more of the thing that caused the thing that caused the animal to do something.
Yahoo gives this example:

"If a zebra is drinking at a water hole, and all of a sudden it hears another zebra nearby make an alarm call, it may stop drinking immediately and start running away instead. The proximate cause of the zebra running away would be the alarm call. But the ultimate cause, or real reason why the zebra is running is survival"

Wikipedia gives this example:

Wikipedia gives this example:

Wikipedia gives this example:
Why did the ship sink?

  • Proximate cause: Because it was holed beneath the waterline, water entered the hull and the ship became denser than the water which supported it, so it couldn't stay afloat.
  • Ultimate cause: Because the ship hit a rock which tore open the hole in the ship's hull.

A proximate cause is an event which is closest to, or immediately responsible for causing, some observed result. This exists in contrast to a higher-level ultimate cause (or distal cause) which is usually thought of as the "real" reason something occurred.
