It is a recreation of an earlier project for the course "Science of the web" taught by Luis Von Ahn at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). This assignment is currently running, likely to finish in early March, 2010.

The origin of the term "rankmaniac" came from a class project at CMU. In the fall of 2008, Carnegie Mellon created a new course on "Science of the Web" taught by Luis von Ahn. And one of the homework assignments in this class was to get web pages with the term "rankmaniac" ranked as highly as possible on Google. ''
