If a person dies at home or anywhere that is NOT a hospital or medical institution, a physician must "pronounce" the date and time of death. Therefore, if at home, an ambulance will pick up the body; the ambulance does not use lights or sirens for this service for which a fee is charged.

Under some situations, a physician who has followed the patient's care consistently and the death was expected will go ahead and sign the death certificate even if the person died at home. In these cases, the funeral home is called and they drive a funeral hearse to pick up the body and take it back to the funeral home for preparations.

In suspicious deaths or when the person has died but was not in the presence of a medical professional or family member, a coroner or a coroner's assistant comes to the scene, especially for homicide when authorities must collect evidence, identify the body and the killer. Then, the coroner's office has a vehicle similar to a hearse in which they transport the body, inside a body bag, placed on a stretcher, and taken to the coroner's office for autopsy. An autopsy must be performed on all homicides, suicides, or suspicious deaths.
