It is a branch of Biology and medicine which is the study of the structure of living things. The name comes from "ana" meaning to separate, and "tomy" meaning to cut. There are two main branches of anatomy, and they are gross anatomy and microscopic anatomy. Gross anatomy would be the study of the parts/organs and their functions, while microscopic anatomy would be the study of the cell structures of whatever organs.
surface anatomy is the anatomy of the outside of an organ, such as the surface of the skin or surface of the heart, while regional anatomy takes the perspective of an entire area, such as in the thoracic region you would study the heart, lungs, aorta, and intercostal muscles just to name a few.
