For a beginner the best bike is the one(s)he can buy where there's help to be had.
As a rookie rider, you will have questions and issues. Buy where you think people will help you out.
Maybe you'll need another saddle, maybe a rack to carry the bike on your car, maybe you decide that fenders will be a nice feature.
Eventually you'll need the brakes and gears adjusted.
Apart from that, try to pick the right price range.
Upgrading later is always hideously expensive, so if you know from the start that you'll want really nice stuff, better get it nice from the beginning.
If you're OK w/o bling value, aim lower.
