The best way to grab your gerbil is around its neck. Use your thumb and index finger to gently grab it around the neck. This way, the gerbil is much more calm and is less likely to fall or get squeezed in the wrong place.

This requires patience. First, put your hand in the cage each day for a minute or two. Gradually it will sit on you hand. Be very calm. Then start to lift up your hand.

Hint: put some sunflower seeds in your hand they love them!!

Many people believe that picking up rodents by the tail is fine as long as you do so at the base of the tail. Gerbils use their tails for balance and never use them to support the weight of the body so it seems unnatural and is definitely stressful and uncomfortable for them. Spend time getting your gerbil used to your hands by calmly holding your hands still in their enclosure. This will allow him or her to get to know you aren't a threat. If you already have a good relationship with your rodent you can cup your hand over it and slide your fingers under it's body so that he can stand on a solid surface before he is lifted out. Once securely cupped in both hands make a little opening for him to peep through. At this point he should feel safer in your hands than out, as he comes to trust you more you can allow more freedom each time until he will be perfectly happy to stay on your body and not leap in a panic to his death.

Never let your guard down though, they can dissappear in a heartbeat. If they trust you though they are much easier to recapture.

What is the best way to get your gerbil out of his cage?

Place your hand (slowly) into the cage and allow the gerbil to approach you...let it sniff your hand and when it is relax, slowly lift it from the cage. Don't try to grab it from above, as this is how their preditors attack them. Place your hand in the cage often and they will get used to it. Also a little food (sunflower seeds or the like) placed in the palm of the hand will make them more curious.

What is bad to do with a gerbil?

Never pull, grab, or pick them up by their tail! The tail is the weakest part of a gerbil's body. Also, handle them gently. They are small and fragile animals, and will only bite if you mistreat them. Hope I helped!

How do you stop a baby gerbils tail from bleeding?

What I did was have a tough glove (or gardening glove) and hold the FRIGHTENED gerbil. Note:A frightened gerbil bites. Grab a napkin, toilet paper, or anything available like that and use it to cover up the wound. Maybe do something like watch TV or something while paying attention to your gerbil. Hold it there for a good 15 to 30 min and he should be fine. Be careful. If not attended to fast enough, the Gerbil could bleed to death. - GerbilExpert
