Best Answer

Always use antifreeze. Water does not have any water pump lubricants or anti corrosion properties, antifreeze coolant does.

Can you put water in the engine coolant reservoir?

If there is no risk of freezing , but it will weaken the strength of the antifreeze / water coolant mixture

How does coolant work?

Engine coolant is what I'm assuming you are talking about. Engine coolant is a mix of water and etholyn glycol (antifreeze). It pulls heat away from your engine block that builds up from the friction of moving parts. The coolant mix allows the coolant to get cold to a point and not freeze because of the etholyn glycol. It is also not good to put straight antifreeze into your engine because antifreeze does not have as much cooling potential as water antifreeze mix. Also if you have just antifreeze in your engine the antifreeze will boil at a much lower temperature than a mix of aproxamalty 50/50.

Is it possible to buy pre mixed coolant for a car?

( YES ) you can buy premixed engine coolant ( antifreeze mixed with water ) or concentrated antifreeze

What is the purpose of engine coolant?

Antifreeze, or engine coolant, is a liquid used to transport heat away from an engine. Antifreeze is mixed with water to lower the freezing point of the liquid to protect components in cold temperatures.

How do you get antifreeze to the motor after changing thermostat?

The water pump will pump coolant(antifreeze & water) through the engine after the thermostat opens up.

New engine in storage does it require antifreeze?

If it has never had any water/coolant added, then no it doesn't require antifreeze.

Can water be used as an engine coolant?

Yes and no. Water is an excellent coolant but does not have all the properties of antifreeze. Water provides no freeze protection or corrosion resistance.

How does antifreeze help you in your engine block?

Antifreeze helps by not allowing the coolant to freeze and possibly crack the water passages of the block.

Can a car overheat when the water system is leaking?

If by water you mean engine coolant, yes. Loss of coolant, antifreeze, is a major cause of overheating.

If the capacity is 6.5 quarts of engine coolant what is the refill ratio of water and new coolant?

You need a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze.
