Hacking is the practice of understanding the workings of a system. Hackers do not Break into systems, do anything illegal, or unlawful. Hackers are intelligent people who do not abuse privileges or discoveries. If you are trying to break into a system or something, You are committing a crime. This is called cracking. Cracking is ILLEGAL. Cracking is also unlawful and should be avoided.
First and foremost, learn how to network. Pretty much every hack you ever do is going to be done across some sort of network -usally the internet. Its rare that you will have physical access to a machine you are trying to hack.
Learn about TCP/IP, learn all about DNS, DHCP, domains, p2ps, routers, switchs, firewalls etc.... As you learn some of this stuff, hacking will come as second nature.
If your serious about hacking you will have to learn Linux. Alot of the big networks use Linux. So your not going to be able to hack something you don't understand. Learn Linux if you ever plan on doing some serious hacking.
Next on the list is programing. For a beginner Visual Basic would be fine. I know some professional programmers who fall back on VB every now and then when they want something reliable with a nice gui done fast. I started with VB and then moved onto Python and then onto Ruby. The transition from VB to Python was straight forward enough and then just to avoid the C and C++ phase everybody else seems to be going through I stuck with Ruby.
Once you have networking, Linux and programming behind you, hacking becomes child's play.
But i most and highly important thing my friend 4got to say is that, to study MS-DOS.

Ethical hacking involves (amongst other things) learning the principles of hacking so as to prevent hackers from actually gaining access to networks that you are responsible for. This is the main reason an "ethical" person would want to learn to hack. Any other reason for hacking is not ethical. Cracking, however is a different concept.
The white hat hacking or ethical hacking can be considered "harmless hacking". Otherwise, all other hackings are considered harmful hacking.
