The Shiite is the second largest group of Muslims, other than the Sunni majority.

The basic faith, customs, traditions and rituals are all the same in these groups. They both follow Mohammad, the same Koran and worship Allah as God.

However, unlike Sunnis, they believe that the family members of Mohammad were also blessed like him, and some selected among them should lead the Muslims as Muhammad's successor.

This primary difference of faith later became an issue, all after Mohammad died. Ali, even being part of Mohammad's family, did not became caliph. Ali himself maybe was not power-hungry, but when Abu Bakr, Uthman and Omar ruled, and even then, Ali was not called for throne, his followers turned this issue into unwanted rivalry.

Later Ali did become caliph, and both the factions remained in peace under him, but once the difference stroke in, it started to get bigger, and by decades the Shiite had their own styles of the very same rituals and ideologies.

Today, the faction has got far beyond it was ever imagined, even with the same basic faith, Shiites and Sunnis do not even share the same mosque for prayer.
shiah which means literally partisans and follower, refers to those who consider the succession to the prophet-upon whom be blessing and peace- to be the special right of the family of the prophet and who in the field of the islamic sciences and culture follow the school of the household of the prophet.
