Crime is an activity that is prohibited by law. If someone engages in that activity, there are penalties that are imposed by society that may include loss of freedom and or property. To be guilty of a crime the government must prove that a person engaged in a prohibited activity and generally that the party involved in that activity knew that it was prohibited.
