Each of the base pairs is formed with a purine and a pyrimidine. Even though the size of a purine differs from the size of a pyrimidine, the sum of these sizes is the same. In other words, the size of a guanine base is roughly the same size as an adenine base, and a cytosine is roughly the same size as a thymine. Pairing of G to C and A to T therefore gives a uniform diameter.
