Senators are elected for staggered six-year terms so that, at any given time, only one-third of Senate was elected in the same year as the most current President. These can be described as Class 1 while those elected two years later are Class 2 and two years after that Class 3. It is purely for the purpose of keeping track who is up for re-election and when.
