What is the difference between a blog and a forum?

Blogs usually have a sole writer or a few that were given permissions. Most forums are open for everyone to write in.

A blog post can usually contain many types of content other than text: images, videos and such, while most forum threads don't support these types of content.

A blog is an online piece written by someone for others to read. It can be mostly factual, mostly opinion, or even just a day-in-the-life diary entry. Comments from readers can often be found following the piece; but interaction is minimal, usually limited to replies (and replies to replies) separated in time by anywhere from minutes to months.

A chatroom, on the other hand, is a real-time message board. Conversation and interaction are the whole purpose; and very often the original topic (if any) gets lost in the bantering and side-interactions between chatters (a phenomenon known as derailing).

In a sense, reading a blog is like listening to someone give a speech or tell a story, while chatting is the online equivalent to hanging out and having a back-and-forth conversation.
