haha this is a good question...
If the person is a moderate, it just depends on what party they want to be identified with.
Another reason might be that if someone is a moderate and they voted for Bush over Kerry in 2004, they might consider themselves as a liberal conservative and vice versa.

Liberals are gernerally more wiling to have more interference in the economy and less in the private where conservatives want less in the economy
Libs believe that you should be self-reliant, but your circumstances many times cause the person to do wrong, where cons believe in full self-reliance.
Libs are not as complacent with tradition as cons and many times will vote for change.
