An IP address is a number assigned to a network or a device, and is the only means of requesting data over TCP/IP connections. Domain names are simply aliases to IP addresses. The main difference is that IP addresses are used for routing, while domain names are used only to look up IP addresses, and cannot participate in routing protocols.
