Passive simply means that the unit does not emit IR light, but does detect it. All warm things emit some degree of IR. a PIR motion detector senses the difference between a warm body and the cold background.
Active IR emits IR light to illuminate an area to be "seen" with it's CCD that is sensitive to IR. Most new Sony camcorders use active IR for "night vision".
IR alone, with no modifier, simply refers to the spectrum of light known as Infra Red, which is slightly above human's vision range.
Passive Infra Red. Units that detect movement.
If it's PIR (that's passive infra-red) then think of it as an eye that can only see changes in heat, staring straight forward. Whenever something that's warmer or colder than the background moves in or out of its field-of-vision, the sensor reacts to this change in scenery and trips an alarm.
Yes. Occupancy sensor do sense the human movements in an open area with in the specified range. It is better to refer to the data sheet of a specific make, model to decide on the range. There are two types of occupancy sensors. Pyrotech Infra red (PIR) type or Ultrsonic type.
PIR's are passive infrared detectors which operate when ever a warm body radiating in IR moves. One can set a threshold for amount of IR and hence indirectly for a given range and size of body temperature. So its obvious that on open areas this will not work as any animal could also trigger the alarm. However this alarm could be used to trigger a camera that is being monitored. If the monitoring has to be automatic than a pattern recognition software will have to used to ensure that a zone is being or has been infiltrated. PIR can be used more effectively in an closed room situation by coupling it with that zone is being infiltrated, that is infiltration will be from a window/door. Now a magnetic door switch can be used to detect the presence of the burglar. --- Yes, a PIR can be used for an entry/exit zone, but if you are using to protect the door as well as a room, I would recommend you lower the entry delay time to as low as possible.
well, the formula for working out volume of a cylinder is PiR^2 which means pie times the radius squared, that gets you one face then you times that by the length so the forumal is R pR2xL where R is the radius and L is the length. Or Volume= Bh B= the area of the bases h= the height
A PIR Motion sensor detects the minute changes in heat and infrared radiation rather than movement.
Yes a PIR sensor does work at night. In general, they work better at night than during the daytime.
Normally a PIR sensor has three cables. Brown: + Blue: - Red: Sensor control Connect the brown and the blue to your power in. All lamps must be connected to blue and red. When the sensor detects movement it "transfers" the ingoing power from the brown wire to the red wire meaning that the lamps for a given period has both + and - = the light up.
PIR = passive infared They detect motion and then activate a switch to turn things on and off
A PIR Sensor can be purchased at any specialty electronics store. It is a sensor primarily used for sensing changes in infrared energy. It is a highly specialized motion detector.

a pir sytem dectects heats and movement so basically like an alarm system!

Passive Infra Red, detects movement and heat...
A Passive InfraRed Sensor (PIR)
The PIR sensors use the detectors or pyroelectric sensors to work. Example include the automatic door openers.
