It's called osmosis.

A selectively permeable membrane will only allow certain molecules to pass trough. To illustrate: If you have a high concentration of sugar molecules on one side of the membrane, no sugar on the other side, and the sugar molecules are too big to pass trough the membrane. If this is the case, then water molecules will diffuse over to the side of the membrane with a high sugar concentration. This happens because the molecules try to distribute themselves evenly in the solution. The water molecules move because the sugar molecules can't.

What does facilitated diffusion?

A transport protein, a large polar molecule, a semi-permeable membrane and a concentration gradient.

Substances that can pass through cell membranes by diffusion include?

depends on type of membrane 1) semi-permeable membrane - allows only solvent molecule to pass ex. parchment paper 2) permeable membrane - allows both solvent and solute molecules to pass ex. filter paper 3) selectively permeable membrane - allows solvent molecules and some of selected solute molecules to pass ex. plasma membrane

What are the properties of solutes that can cross a membrane by simple diffusion?

The size of the molecule. Usually if a membrane is semi - permeable (only allows some molecules through by simple diffusion) the molecule that will be allowed through most is H2O(water).

What structure allows only certain things to pass in and out of a cell?

The cell membrane. It is a semi-permeable membrane (or selectively permeable membrane) - this means that it only lets certain certain molecules or ions pass in or out of the cell. Permeability may depend on the molecule's size, solubility, properties, or chemistry.

What organelle is part of selectively permeable?

It is based on the structure of the cell membrane, which has proteins and lipids in it that make some substances impermeable to the membrane, often based on slight electrical charges and sometimes by size of the molecule or other chemical properties. Some substances require an enzyme or hormone to cross the barrier of the cell membrane, such as binding sites on cell membranes that will not allow glucose into the cell unless insulin binds with the sites, which forms a chemical bridge to allow glucose molecules to pass through the cell membrane into the cell. Without the insulin, the cell membrane is impermeable to glucose.

Which the two structure in plant cell are selectively permeable allowing molecules of water and small solutes to pass through but preventing the passage of large solute molecule?

Cell membrane and sap vacuole membrane

Which the structure in plant cell are selectively permeable allowing molecules of water and small solutes to pass through but preventing the passage of large solute molecule?

only plasma membrane

What is diffusion in biology?

Diffusion is the process that occurs when a certain concentrated volume of material moves to a less concentrated state. Facilitated diffusion is different and is done with the help of pumps actively transporting materials across the cell membrane to create the equilibrium on both sides of the membrane. ža specific type of passive transport žthe movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration ždissolved particles that are small or nonpolar can diffuse through the cell membrane ždiffusion is used to reach equilibrium –equilibrium: a condition in which the concentration of a substance is equal throughout a space

What does facilitated diffusion requires?

Facilitated diffusion requires energy. This is because facilitated diffusion is the transfer of molecules from a lower concentration to a higher concentration.membrain pouch

What structure is the statement below most likely referring to A large glucose molecule requires facilitated diffusion but an oxygen molecule does not?

A large glucose molecule requires facilitated diffusion but an oxygen molecule does not is a semipermeable membrane.

State one possible reason a certain substance can not pass across a cell membrane?

The cell membrane is selectively permeable. Some substances like molecules are too big to pass through the membrane. The membrane allows passive transport of moleculesÊ by filtration, diffusion, or osmosis.

What type of molecule movement consist on one way diffusion across a semi permeable membrane?

The movement of molecules across the semipermeable membrane follows the law of diffusion. Thus, the molecules of a substance move from their higher concentration towards their lower concentration by their own kinetic energy.
