The general purpose of cellular respiration is to exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen inside the cells of the body.

It is the process by wich cells make ATP by breaking down organic compounds.

In simpler terms its purpose is to extract useable energy from glucose.

Respiration provides an organism with energy. There are two general ways to do this, aerobic or anaerobic. Aerobic respiration requires oxygen, which is why animals need to breathe. Animals also carry out anaerobic respiration which is much less efficient because less energy is extracted from nutritional sources than when oxygen is available.

The term "cellular" here distinguishes it from breathing, which is called "anatomic" respiration. That is, breathing is the physical process of delivering oxygen to cells, where the REAL work of extracting energy begins.

By the way, cells store most of the energy in temporary, but convenient, chemical storage units known as ATP (adenosine triphosphate) molecules.
