If it is the Church that was the site of the Massachusetts convention that met to ratify the Constitution of the United States in January and February of 1788, then it is one of the Nation's most hallowed shrines.

The gathering of aristocrats and farmers showed what tempered, but ardent, discourse among men of honor and judgment can create. The final vote for ratification was 187 to 168. Had the ratification by Massachusetts failed, the consensus is clear that it would have failed throughout the land.

Sam Adams stood dramatically tall and the most articulate and persuasive delegate was a plowman from Lanesborough, Jonathan Smith, who opined that he 'knew the worth of good government by the want of it".

This event is one of the most significant in our nation's history and certainly one of the most critical.

The entire story can be wonderfully enjoyed by reading "Miracle at Philadelphia" by Catherine Drinker Bowen.

This was a time when men ... and women ... were able to reach the stars.
