It depends on what is causing it.

For example, if it is caused by cancer then obviously the thyroid needs to be destroyed or removed immediately.

However most cases of hyperthyroidism in developed countries are caused by an autoimmune condition called Graves disease. This can be treated with drugs that block the production of thyroid hormone, radioactive iodine that destroys the thyroid, or surgical removal of the thyroid gland. Unfortunately, none of these options treat the underlying problem, ie the production of autoantibodies against TSH receptors on the thyroid gland. Autoimmunity was only really discovered in the 1960s and as yet we have little idea how to treat immune system disorders.

Assess the patient for manifestations of hypothyroidism an dresponse to therapy (eg: mental status, quality of skin and hair, subnormal temperature, bracycardia, respiratory rate, BP, worsening heart failure, wt. gain or loss). Provide instructions for adhering to a low calorie diet until the patient's wt. stabilizes within an ideal range. Weight gain deelops when the patient's appetite improves with the start of therapy, but energy levels have not yet improved. Encourage activity as tolerated to reduce constipation Advise the pt. to drink 6-8 glasses of water daily and eat high fiber foods. A stool softner may be needed if diet and exercise are ineffective. Although there may be treatments for conditions which may cause hypothyroidism, the treatment for the condition itself is hormone replacement therapy, the hormone being the thyroid hormone. The most used is synthroid; a simple tablet taken each day will prevent the symptoms associated with the condition and allow the patient to live a normal life.
