The human haploid DNA, that is the DNA contained in a human gamete, is 3.3 billion base pairs long. So the DNA of a human contains 6.6 billion base pairs. now the distance between two base pairs in a DNA helix is 0.34 nm. therefore the length of the DNA double helix in a single human cell would come to about 2.2 m, approximately. Nature has devised its own ways to package such a long DNA strand in the nucleus of every human cell, which is so tiny when compared to the length of the DNA.

-they are pretty tiny

Chromosomes vary in size, but the DNA would generally be a few cm (inches). The total length of one copy of all chromosomes is about 1 meter (a little over 3 feet). Since you have one copy from each parent, the total is about 2 meters per cell.

One point Eight Seven METERS LONG - all 23 Paired Chromosomes - [1.87 meters of chromatin jammed into a nucleus barely one micron across!].

Multiplied by the trillions of Cells in Our Bodies =!

The size of a typical human Cell is about ten microns across.

That makes one million Cells per cubic millimeter of Tissue.

10000 DNA strands.

Describe the function of electricity and the agarose gel in electrophoresis?

The electricity pulls the polar DNA strands through the gel, and shorter DNA strands move farther because they are less inhibited by the gel. The gel acts as drag to separate the different length DNA strands, so different DNA creates specific dye bands.

How many strands is DNA made of?
