A long answer.
The town area of Dunedin lies on a flat area abutting a series of hills. So the early surveyor found it comfortable to lay out a rectangular grid of streets on the flat; and on the hill slopes, another rectangular set of streets but angled at 45o to those on the flat. So the main street follows along this hill/flat junction, and an Octagon was used in the centre to join these two geometries. The Northern part of this main street is George Street, and the Southern part is named Princes Street. And the bit crossing the middle of the Octagon has no name.
Castle Street
