Alternate wordings, or "alternates," are other ways of saying the same exact question as each primary question on WikiAnswers. The primary question on this page is "What is the meaning of 'Split' on WikiAnswers?"
You should split alternates that are asking something different than the primary question. Oftentimes when a user is asking a question they will indicate that it is the same as an existing question -- when it really isn't. This causes bad alternates to be created. They should be either split out into separate questions or grouped into other questions using the "Split and Merge" tool.
Because we are a Q&A website you always want to take a narrow view when considering whether an alternate belongs under a primary question. "What is the population of New York?" and "What is the population of New York in 2007?" are two different questions and should be split apart. Oftentimes when asking a new question on WikiAnswers, a user will erroneously indicate that their question is the same as an existing question on the site. This creates an inaccurate alternate wording. You should "split" inaccurate alternate wordings you encounter on the "edit alternates" page by clicking "split" next to each of the wordings. Then those wordings will become separate primary questions rather than alternates. Note: There is also a "Split" tool for supervisors in the left menu which enables you to split a compound question (such as "How and where did World War 1 start?") into 2 separate questions ("How did World War 1 start?" and "Where did World War 1 start?").
'Batch Split' is a tool on WikiAnswers only available to Supervisors, in which incorrect alternate wordings to multiple questions can be split all at one time, instead of one at a time. 'Batch' is just another word for 'Bundle', or basically, a lot of questions, which is referred to as a 'batch' of questions. 'Split' is separating an alternate wording from it's parent question, thereby creating the term 'Batch Split'.

The meaning of WikiAnswers is so people can ask questions and others can answer them. I think that more people are asking questions (which is fine) but not many people are willing to answer them.
Historical contribution points were introduced on Mon Feb 01, 2010, when the Split Contributions feature went live on WikiAnswers.

If the alternate wording is "Is Casting Crowns a Christian band?" for the question "Who is the drummer of Casting Crowns?" They need to be split because they are two different questions.
