the Japan flag is called hi no maru the red circle symboilzes the sun.
The flag is meant to show the sun on a white background, the naval flag is showing the rising sun. In Japan, red means luck and it is commonly taught to children that the colour of the sun is Red, it refers to Japan's name `land of the rising sun` because of the fact travelers always saw the sun rise when traveling there.
