Stand and Deliver? But the teacher in that was not "white", he was latino. Also possibly Freedom Writers, with Hilary Swank as the teacher.
I believe the movie you ask about is called "The Wave" with Bruce Davison as the teacher. I thought I saw it earlier than 1996, but maybe not.
It's titled " Higher Learning". Not the one that stars Omar Epps, Michael Rappaport and Kristy Swanson as racially divided college students. In this movie, the students are out of control, no teacher can look at any student for more than five seconds without facing criminal charges. The teacher tricks some of the students with a fake trip, imprisoned them all in order to teach them. After their ordeal, they respected him for doing so and became millionaires from their book deals.
I believe you're thinking of Samuel L. Jackson in the 1997 movie, "187."
a good movie to show students about conflict is...BLIND SIDE!
They all have SCORES!
What Disney channel movie
It was a story about a teacher Kimo Escalante who wants to try to challenge the students at Garfield H.S. in East Los Angeles. He convinces the principal to let him teach calculus. So He teaches them AP calculus, but when they take the AP calculus test they score really high, above average scores. They think that the students cheated so they tell them they have to retest, and they know it's going to be a harder test so they have to buckle down and study really hard. Eventually they retake the test and get the same scores. It stars Edward James OImos, and Lou Diamond Phillips. I liked the movie very much, it's an inspirational type movie.

The movie that featured a tough math teacher played by Edward James Olmos is "Stand and Deliver" (1988). It is based on the true story of Jaime Escalante, a high school teacher who successfully taught calculus to a group of underprivileged students.
If it is a little girl you are shopping for, I would get the imagine movie star. Why? Because all they want to be when they are younger is famous! If she is older, say... like 12? More like the imagine teacher, because they are in school, and some of them would like to pursue the job of a teacher! HOPE IT HELPED!:D
I liked how the movie portrayed the power of education and how it can positively impact students' lives. The story of the teacher connecting with her students and inspiring them to overcome their challenges was moving and inspiring. The film also highlighted important social issues such as racism and inequality in education.
