The antagonist in the movie Star Wars (now known as Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope) is Darth Vader. Throughout all six Star Wars films, the main antagonist is Darth Sidious (also known as Senator/Chancellor/Emperor Palpatine), though the audience is unaware of this in Episode IV as he is only mentioned in passing.
In The Phantom Menace, Sidious gets the Trade Federation to blockade the planet Naboo, simultaneously sowing seeds of distrust between the Federation and the Republic and inciting a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum (the head of the Senate). He is then voted in as the new chancellor.
In Attack of the Clones, he starts the Clone Wars by secretly supporting the Confederacy of Independent Systems and arranging for a clone army to be bred for the Republic.
In Revenge of the Sith, he gains more and more emergency powers as the Clone Wars rage on and eventually declares himself Emperor. Taking advantage of Anakin Skywalker's trust in him, he exploits the young Jedi's fears of losing his wife Padme and manipulates him into betraying his Order and becoming Darth Vader. Sidious also issues Order 66, which called for the clone army to turn on their Jedi generals, even going so far as to kill Jedi children.
Sidious does not appear in A New Hope, but his apprentice, Darth Vader, destroys a planet full of people.
In The Empire Strikes Back, Sidious warns his apprentice Vader that Luke Skywalker is becoming more powerful.
In Return of the Jedi, Sidious nearly kills Luke Skywalker with Force lightning when he refuses to turn to the Dark Side of the Force; Vader turns on him and kills him.
Many other atrocities are committed by and in the name of Darth Sidious in the Star Wars expanded universe.
