The maximum state of paralysis is usually reached within just a few days. The remaining nerves begin to grow branches to compensate the destroyed nerves. This process continues for about six months.

There are not actually stages of polio but types. The first type is non-symptomatic polio. In this type, most people infected don't even are aware that they have been infected. This about 95 % of those who come into contact with the virus.

The second type is called symptomatic polio. The people infected can have minor signs like flu symptoms or they can be sicker and have meningitis and other neurological disorders. Neither of these two show paralysis. Finally, they could be very sick and show signs of paralysis. This is called paralytic polio. It can cause muscle paralysis or even death.
