The process is pretty simple. Firstly you take a civil servant test. The higher you score the better chance you have making it into the second phase. Usually there are three bands of results for the test - and the scoring is weighed on how many people took the test. In my case I case off of 5114 in 1986 - I scored a 92.6, placing me in band two, 2/5 of a point from making band one. One the list is gathered notifications for the first few thousand are mailed and you're ready to start your next phase - the investigation. You report to a facility named by the department - mine was in the court house in downtown Manhattan. Here you are given the information you will need to get hired. A quick eye test, and hours of hearing Horror stories from seasoned officers - this is done to see if you have the stomach - don't be surprised to see people leaving in flocks.

At the end of the day you return home, and start your application packet - this packet is then brought to the Applicant Investigation Unit. You'll be assigned an investigator. As the investigation proceeds you'll be scheduled for a Psychological exam, both written and oral, as well as a medical exam (12 hours). Once this is complete and you pass the aforementioned, you are cleared for the academy. You are usually notified 4-5 days before the academy. You need to attend a mini-medical to make sure your urine is clean, and you have no broken bones. Around three days later, you begin the academy. Six month later you are a full-fledged PPO (Probationary Police Officer).
