∙ 12y agoThis number is called "the number of the beast" in Revelation 13:18. It is a kind of secret code so that the original readers could work out the identity of the beast.
Actually the code is not very secret, and anyone who knows the Hebrew alphabet can work it out. You assign a number to each letter, then add up the numbers.
One person whose Hebrew name adds up to 666 is NERO CAESAR. This is almost certainly the person intended, as he persecuted the Christians and forced everyone to worship himself. Nero was murdered, but some people were convinced by a pretender who claimed that the not-quite-dead Emperor had come back.

The number 666, found in the Book of Revelation, means nothing of any significance. Some of the earliest copies of Revelation have the number 616 instead, so this might have been the original number used here. This shows how wrong we would be to rely on biblical numerology to understand future events.

The Bible tells us: "WISDOM is needed to UNDERSTAND this. Let the one who has UNDERSTANDING [the intellect] solvethe number of the Beast..." (Rev.13:18 NLT New Living Translation).
Proverbs 9:10 provides us with the "source" of Wisdom and Understanding as the Bible defines these terms:
"FEAR of the LORD is the beginning [foundation] of WISDOM. Knowledge of the Holy One [familiarity with God's Word, the Bible] results in UNDERSTANDING." (Prov.9:10 NLT)
So, it would seem that a working relationship with God is necessary for this computation... or simply having it "Divinely Revealed" by God to His servants.
In this day and age... the numerical equivalents of the letters of the alphabet is essentially a lost art. Yet, in a search of the internet... we discover page after page of people who have "added up the letters of the names" of just about anyone they care to claim as the "Beast," just by combining and rearranging their given name, a foreshortening of their name, middle name or initial, nickname... or any number of other combinations of ways to arrive at 666. And using this system... you soon discover that just about everyone in the world can potentially be the Beast, if you want them to be.
What it boils down to, is that certain prophesied unprecedented, horrific, global events and conditions are to occur on earth, that will give rise to this person's appearance... and that those whom God blesses with His "Wisdom and Understanding" will recognize and know who he is long before anyone manages to compute the number of his name.
Matthew Henry provides yet another perspective on this matter:
"...The number of the beast is given, so as to show the infinite wisdom of God, and to exercise the wisdom of men. The number is the number of a man, computed after the usual manner among men, and it is 666. What or who is intended by this, remains a mystery. To almost every religious dispute this number has yet to be applied, and it may reasonably be doubted whether the meaning has yet been discovered. But he who has wisdom and understanding, will see that all the enemies of God are numbered and marked out for destruction; that the term of their power will soon expire, and that all the nations shall submit to our King of righteousness and peace." (Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary: Revelation 13:16-18)
