I believe the use of timbers allowed the load of the roof and flooring to be distributed to a known frame that was free standing. The timber posts, arches and horizontal members were jointed in a manner that allowed weight to be supported above a single floor. Post and beam frames were filled in with wall material that did not need to support the weight of walls above them. This freedom allowed walls to remain thin throughout the structure and need not be wider at the ground line to support upper portions of the same wall.
The architects could be freed from old style building conventions and produced many elegant structures that showed off the wood available, employed new craftsmen who knew jointing and allowed multistory structures with less materials.
