The 10 year average rate is 13.9 per 100,000 per year on the Navajo Nation. It is remarkably stable and much lower than many Native American communities.
It is hard to measure rates in very rural areas. Some percentage of single car accidents are probably actually suicides as well. Males account for 85% of the deaths. Males 24.5/100,000 and females 3.6. 30% were 25-34 years old. Most were in the 15-44 year range which is different that the rest of the US. The rates for the elderly are much lower than the rest of the US, 4.4. Rates of suicide by firearm are much lower ( 22%)on the Navajo Nation.
For comparison the rates for the US as a whole are 12/100,000. France is 14.7 and South Korea is 28.1
The Navajo (Dine') Reservation is in the Great Basin Desert region of the southwestern United States.
The largest Indian Reservation in the US, in both square miles and population, is the Navajo Indian Reservation with 24,096.30 square miles and a population of 180,462 in the 2000 census.
The Navajo or Navaho (Dine') are the largest federally recognized tribe of Native Americans in the United States. They live in the southwestern US, in the Four Corners region, in the US states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. The Navajo Nation, an independent government body, manages the Navajo Indian Reservation.
It is a bit bigger than West Virgina. 27,000 square miles vs 24,000.
The origin of the word Navajo comes from the Spanish conquistadors who, in their travels into the North American continent, used this as a curse word because the Indigenous people would steal their horses under the cover of darkness. The slang word is loosely translated as 'underminers' or 'those who cut from under'. To the strict, true-blooded Dine' the word is akin to using the 'N-word' to defame Black Americans.

The Navajo is the largest tribe of Native Americans in the United States. The 17-million acre Navajo reservation includes land in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and a small part of Colorado. The Navajo Reservation is the largest reservation in the US.
The Hopi Reservation is within the Navajo Reservation in north-eastern Arizona.
Good Question! The Navajo Reservation in Arizona observes daylight savings time (while most of the rest of Arizona does not) because while the largest portion of the Navajo Reservation is in Arizona, parts of it do extend into New Mexico and Utah, both of which do observe daylight savings time. Interesting side note: If you were to travel from say, Grand Canyon east across The Navajo Reservation passing through Jeddito to maybe the Hubbell trading Post, you'd have to reset your watch five times to keep up. Reason? The Hopi Reservation, nestled inside the boundaries of the Navajo Reservation does not change time; and Jeddito is in a very small portion of the Navajo Reservation that lies within the boundaries of the Hopi Reservation.
