In the article, " Burning Out at Nine" by Nadya Labi, the author states that kids were very hectic in 1998. Research in 1997 showed that kids of every background were busy and rarely got enough free time. They spent most of their time in school, doing chores, assisting their parents with errands, and and participating in extracuricular activities. Children's leisure time dropped from about 40% of the day in 1881 to about 25% in 1998.

If children don't get enough time to play or have fun, then we could have some very messed up kids. Child experts say that fun is a good thing. It allows the child to be imaginative and creative. If this pattern goes on, then children will grow up to be " obsessive-complusive people."

With their busy schedule, kids found less time to watch television. Although kids were watching less TV, they were not replacing it with reading. Parents and teachers tried their best to get children to read more. Study showed that children read only an hour a week.
