* Buddha (The Enlightened or Awakened One): An inspiration for us all that an ordinary person can escape from the cycle of death and rebirth without recourse to supernatural guides or deities. * Dharma (The Teaching): The teachings of the Buddha which show us the path to follow to achieve enlightenment. * Sangha (The Community): Both the community of those who have attained enlightenment, and the community of practicing Buddhists who help us and who we, in turn, help.
Basically the Three Jewels show you where you can get to, provides a path to get there, and provides a community of supportive fellow travelers to help you on your journey.
