You didn't say what country it's from, but in 1997 at least 4 European countries used coins denominated in francs - France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland.
All but Switzerland are part of the EU so they now use the euro, meaning any circulation coins from before the switch will have little or no exchange value. Even at the time of conversion each country's franc was worth only a small fraction of a US dollar, e.g. 1 French franc was about 20¢ while a Luxembourg franc was 3¢.
If your coin is from Switzerland it's still in use. As of 02/2010 it has an exchange value of roughly 94 cents.
