The zone of saturation is that part of the soil or rock mass below earth's surface that is below the ground water table. This acts to reduce the permeability of the soil to water and also due to surface tension forces in water and the resultant capillary actions leads to the pore water being in tension (pore water pressures are negative). This acts to increase the shear strength of the soil in this region.
