Lots of things. I can only give my male point of view. When you make eye contact, hold it and acknowledge it. A slight nod of the head, raising of the eyebrows, something to show that you see and acknowledge the other person. Face to face, holding eye contact shows you are paying attention to the person. Looking down or away can be a sign of weakness, or give the impression you are dismissing the other person as not being important to you. How you make and break eye contact tells the other person a lot. How you do it, your overall body language says a lot. Holding contact tends to give the impression you are confident and comfortable with yourself. May be seen as arrogant also. Usually if you are trying to intimidate someone you hold contact until they look away. This usually means you win. It can also cause a fight depending on the other person and their personality.
