Time management is a misnomer, as time cannot be managed. In fact, it's an imaginary construct according to Albert Einstein.

What we can do, however, is manage our actions, and we require time as a peculiar kind of resource in order to do so.

Time management involves the management of our selves; our habits, practices and actions.

Before we are become aware of time we do engage in behaviors everyday, but none of them are defined as "time management." When we become time conscious as children, we begin to imagine a new resource: time in the future. We start to make commitments that take place in the future.

These commitments can be called "time demands" and we very quickly learn to create them continuously in our waking and even sleeping moments. They are mental constructs that have tangible and emotional properties.

When we manage them well, we experience a certain peace of mind, and when we don't we experience overwhelm. This overwhelm has real-world components, such as missed appointments, late arrivals, un-replied emails, broken promises to go to the gym, etc.

Most people aren't taught formal time management, and instead come up with their own methods of dealing with time demands. By the time they reach early adulthood, they usually have some kind of habitual process in place.

Later on in life, the may seek to upgrade their self-taught systems, but this difficult task is only undertaken by a minority.
