Copper is used the majority of the time.

Gold is sometimes because it does not corrode.

Tungsten is used in light bulbs because it is a good resistor and resists the flow of electrons.

Aluminum and silver are also sometimes used.

There is also some recent research in safely using sodium and lithium.

Silver is the best electrical conductor but its cost prevents its use in ordinary wiring. copper is the next best, with aluminium third.

For house wiring copper is almost universal. For overhead power lines aluminium is preferred for its lower density which reduces the cost of overhead lines significantly although slightly larger conductors must be used for a given amount of power.

Conduction is the capability of moving electric charge; electrons, negative charge, and holes, positive charge. The better the conductor is determined by the valence band of the atom. Metals in general contain 2 to 3 electrons in their outer valence band to flow from atom to atom causing electrical current.

Most familiar conductors are metallic. Copper is the most common material used for electrical wiring. Silver is the best conductor, but is expensive. Gold is used for high-quality surface-to-surface contacts. However, there are also many non-metallic conductors, including graphite, solutions of salts, and all plasmas. See electrical conduction for more information on the physical mechanism for charge flow in materials.

Copper is the most common metal used in electrical wires because it has a structure which includes freely-moving negatively-charged particles - called electrons - which are essential for the conduction of electricity.

Copper is the most common metal used for water pipes because it is very ductile and malleable so it can be made into many useful shapes. Also, pipes made of copper can be bent into curves very easily.

Another reason why copper is used for water pipes is that it does not corrode or rust away from contact with water and air, which is what used to happen when iron was used for pipes instead of copper.

Another answer

Copper, (Cu) because of its high conductivity, and because it is very ductile and malleable. Gold is better, however it is far more expensive, so Copper is used instead.

That would be copper. Funny, because "Plumbing" means something like, "making with lead".

How does a contactor energise?

Contactors have movable contacts in them which are operated by the action of the solenoid that they are attached too. This solenoid is basically an electromagnet with a spring that resets the contacts to the open position when current is removed from the solenoid's coil/windings. When an electrical current is fed through the coil of the solenoid it creates a magnetic field; the force of the field is stronger than the opposing force of the restting spring thus the moving part of the solenoid which has the contacts attached to it, moves down completing the electrical circuit. Contactors are usually used in cases where the voltages and currents levels to be used are way beyond the capacity of a normal switch. A common example would be as a direct on line starter for a large electrical motor, which usually have large starting current of up to 5-8 times the run current of the motor. It is also important to note that voltage used to energize the contactors coil can be much smaller than the actual voltage be conveyed by the contacts which feed the electrical load.

Do space shuttles need iridium compound?

Iridium is a metal used in the hardening of platinum alloys. It's primary use is in high temperature applications, heavy-duty electrical contacts, and radioactive isotopes are used in cancer treatment. If iridium is used anywhere in the shuttle orbiters or other components of the shuttle stack, its' use is probably minimal and perhaps in electrical contacts.
