You can put any fish that will fit into a bowl inside of one, but keeping is another matter. Much as it's potentially possible to keep a dog alive for a while inside of a closet, don't expect the health of the dog in the closet or the fish in the bowl to remain anywhere near optimal. Besides, fish have interesting behaviors you simply will not see in a bowl.

That said, some species of betta will survive for a few years in a bowl as long as you are willing to do a lot of extra water changes. This includes the most common species, Betta splendens, which you often find sold in cups. As with any other fish, however, they do better in larger tanks with full filtration systems.

Some might suggest the goldfish, but understand that even the shorter-bodied goldfish can grow to near a foot long if kept correctly, though it surely never will if kept in a bowl. Keeping goldfish in bowls comes from a misunderstood antiquated practice by the Chinese, who first bred goldfish. They kept goldfish in ponds normally, as is best for that species, and would occasionally put one or two in a bowl and place it on a dinner table as a form of decoration, to be put back out in the pond once dinner was finished.

A better suggestion for your fish bowl would be to try making a small terrarium out of it; with a little soil and some interesting plants, you can create and maintain a beautiful little micro-environment you can enjoy nearly anywhere in your home.

It depends on the size of the bowl, but in a standard sized fish bowl you can keep toy fish, a can of tuna, gold fish crackers almost indefinitely.

well i would keep a tetra or a gold fish in a bowl so if you keep a fish in the bowl it should be a small and active fish this means the black tetra if you are a first time fish owner i suggest you buy gold fish which are very easy to care for also i have my own fish which are tetras and if you keep it in a bowl add some decoration so your fish can hide all fish are unique and after all it is your choice.

Is a filter good on a fish bowl?

it is always good to get some kind of filter for your fish, but natural ponds dont' always need one. the filters will keep out some bad bacteria though, and keep your fish healthy longer, and allow you to actually see them. goldfish are very hardy and can withstand quite a bit.
