At the same time that Elizabethan England saw a flourishing of drama, it also saw a flourishing of music. Music was sung individually or in groups, and played solo or in groups or consorts. Some of the composers and musicians of the era were Byrd, Morley and Dowland. Some examples are attached as related links, including Thomas's Morley's setting for Shakespeare's song lyric "It Was a Lover and his Lass"
We cannot be sure of most of the music which Shakespeare may have listened to but there is at least one song we can be pretty sure he heard. In his play As You Like It he wrote the lyric to a song "It was a lover and his lass". We have the music written to these lyrics by Thomas Morley at about the same time. We can be pretty sure that Morley wrote the music so it could be played in the play and Shakespeare listened to it. A performance accompanied by the lute is added as a related link.
Shakespeare wrote songs into many of his plays, knowing that audiences expected them. Indeed, his play As You Like It has so many songs in it, it is almost a musical. But as for the kind of music Shakespeare liked, there was much less variety in popular music than there is now. The madrigal was a common form of music, a song in which people sang many interweaving and intertwining parts, or those parts were played by instruments, like recorders. Popular instruments of the time, apart from recorders, were lutes, oboes (spelled hautboys), trumpets, drums, trombones (called sackbuts) and cornets (sort of a cross between a Clarinet and a trumpet). These instruments appear in the stage directions of Shakespeare's plays. If you know The Taming of the Shrew you will remember that lute lessons play a part in the attempt to get at Bianca.
If you would like to hear a song which might have been heard at the Globe Theatre, look up "It was a lover and his lass", music by Thomas Morley and words by William Shakespeare on YouTube. Choose one of the versions which is sung by a soprano and accompanied by lute.
he liked to listen to reliegious music 3-----
Shakespeare seems to have liked popular English folk songs.
He basically like to listen to Classical Music, from time to time. Since he was a busy man at the Globe Theatre he didnt have enough time.
We don't know anything about what Shakespeare did or didn't like. He was very private about his private life.
no body will ever know
