In 1939, just before World War II, physicists including Albert Einstein had written a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt about the possibilities of a "bomb" releasing fission energy from a critical mass of uranium. After the war broke out, FDR became concerned about the possibility that Germany could develop such a bomb, and in 1941 created the OSRD (Office of Scientific Research and Development) to investigate further. By 1942, the far-flung efforts were placed under the military command known collectively as the Manhattan Project.
