Joseph teaches us that we should also forgive those who wronged us.

The life story of Joseph tells us that even sufferings have a higher purpose. Joseph was sold, out of jealousy, by his own brothers to Egyptian slave traders. In Egypt, he gained the favor of the Pharaoh's commander of guards but was framed by the commander's wife when he rejected her sexual advances. From prison, his reputation for dream interpretation reached the Pharaoh's ears, and he eventually gained the favor of the Pharaoh by telling him the meaning of his dream. When Joseph became prime minister and the famine in the Pharaoh's dream came true, Joseph's family traveled to Egypt to buy some grain. The chain of events that began with the betrayal of Joseph by his brothers finally led to reunification with his family and the saving of his family from the effects of famine. Nobody ever thought then that Joseph's sufferings would lead to greater blessings. Perhaps not even Joseph, but he kept his faith in God and that is what really what matters.

The story of Joseph is the longest in the Book of Genesis. He is portrayed as lacking in empathy and as a divisive character, but a great administrator. Joseph told his brothers two dreams, in which they would be utterly subservient to him, thereby engendering their resentment and bringing about his enslavement in Egypt. He is never shown as talking to God and takes personal credit for his apparent ability to interpret dreams.

While there are other lessons that can be learnt from the story, perhaps the most important lesson is humility. Joseph riled his brothers, not so much by wearing the coat of many colours, probably a sign from Jacob of his future right to inheritance, but by telling in full detail of his dreams of power over them. Had he not done so he could have avoided enslavement in Egypt. Certainly, the storyline goes on to turn Joseph's misfortune into a position of almost absolute power, but we know that if we bring misfortune onto ourselves then unfortunate we will remain. We must learn to respect others, regardless of their station in life, consider their sensitivities and avoid appearing arrogant.

The moral of the story is that God provides. God demands true worship and obedience, and tested that to the utmost by taking Abraham's most treasured possession, at least so it seemed. But, God stopped Abraham from sacrificing his son, and provided a proper sacrifice. Abraham was justified before God for his faith in the God that provides.

Forgiveness. In the story of Jacob, he was sold to slave drivers by his own brothers. Yet through everything Joseph was taken care of and when he saw his brothers again, he forgave them, and welcomed them finally with open arms.
