Cacao (or cocoa) beans are the seeds of an Amozonian fruiting tree. The Mexican Mayan kings would drink up to 30 pure chocolate drinks per day to maintain their vigour and valued the bean so highly that it was used as money.

Theobroma cacao means 'food of the Gods'. the bean has 400 flavour compounds, which gives it 200% more flavour than any other food. If you eat the beans raw (buy from Health Food stores) you peel the bean first - it tastes very bitter. Very hard to get used to, and you can only nibble on it! Great to use crushed into smoothies or grind into coffee.
