It is difficult to answer this question, because in some countries, admitting or acknowledging that one is gay could cause an arrest or imprisonment, so it is a problem finding accurate statistics world-wide. That said, most scientists and demographers estimate that about 5% of the population in the United States is gay, and it would be likely that the figure is similar in many other countries.

There is no census on gays or homosexuals in the world or anywhere else. Though there have been estimates made of how many gays may live in a certain area, the exact number is not available. This is because you have to take a few things into account. Though there are gays (like myself) that are open about their sexuality, there are still many out there that are uncomfortable with it or are scared they will be punished or ridiculed, and even some that can't come out due to social status that couldn't be counted.

As far as how many gay guys there are in the world, I wouldn't even try to begin to give you a rough estimate.

The US census does not collect data on sexuality; however, according to a recent study by the Williams Institute at the University of California, 11% of adults in the US have engaged in same-sex sexual behavior, but only 3.5% of the population identifies as being lesbian, gay, or bi-sexual. This lack of self-identification as being gay while actively engaging in homosexual behavior is most likely due to the fact that gays continue to be persecuted in U.S. culture, but even if people do not self-identify as being gay, the fact that they are attracted to the same gender and/or have sex with the same gender is far more indicative of their sexuality than how they choose to identify themselves to the world.

Hate groups that persecute gays have taken these numbers that indicate how many people self-identify as being gay as the actual amount of people who are homosexual instead of looking at the much larger number of people who are attracted to the same-sex and/or have engaged in same-sex sexual behavior.

It is actually quite difficult to get an accurate figure for the percentage of homosexuality in the world, because there are varying degrees of hatred and persecution of homosexuals in all countries, and many homosexuals do not like to admit to their sexual orientation. In the Muslim world, homosexuality is punishable by death. Homosexuality has recently become illegal in Russia. In the US, homosexuality is perfectly legal, but a great many people disapprove of it, so there is still social pressure for homosexuals to remain in the closet. Given these impediments, it is difficult to get the correct result by doing a survey and asking people whether they are gay or straight. I have seen estimates of as high as 10% of the male population being gay, which I don't believe; I think that 5% is a more realistic figure, just based on my own observations. Homosexuality appears to be less prevalent in the female population, but I would estimate that perhaps 2% are lesbian. These are not solidly established statistics, they are just my personal guesses.
